BacklineBabes Ambassador Emma Horner

How did you first get into surfing?

I have always been an ocean lover, living in Muizenberg most of my life, however I never took the plunge to start surfing.  It all began on a surf date a few years ago with my now fiancé and the rest is history, I was hooked!

Describe what surfing means to you in 3 words:

Freeing, community and movement

What is your dream surf destination?

Bali Bali Bali!

What do you do outside of the water?

Work wise, I am the founder/ cofounder of Backline Babes and I work as Clinical Dietitian at a District Hospital. Outside of work, I recently got back into mountain biking, love a little camping trip, time with friends and/or family and of course a boogie now and then.

Do you prefer a dawny surf or sunset surf?

Definitely a dawny

Longboard or shortboard?

Longboarding all the way.

What's your favourite post-surf snack?

Fish & chips or a bacon avo feta pizza!

Backline Babes Surf Coach Tracy
Backline Babes Coach Ingi
Backline Babes Coach Jess

Coach Tracy started surfing at the age of 14 and has 23 years of surfing experience! She surfed competitively for 5 years and made the Boland Surf Team in her Matric year. She placed 7th at SA Champs in the under 18 shortboard division. She now surfs for fun and shares the stoke with her 2 groms and anyone else wanting to learn.

Coach Ingi started surfing in the 90s, when there was hardly another female in the water, and since she’s joined the Backlinebabes, Ingi’s been on a mission to reshape the surfing narrative for girls of all ages. She brings boundless energy to each lesson, helping newbies face their fears and gain confidence in navigating the waves.

Coach Jess is originally from Durban and started surfing at the age of 7 - she now has 20 years of surfing under her ‘board’. She competed at Provincial and National levels and is as passionate about surfing today as when she first started. Jess loves coaching and empowering girls and women to feel safe, strong and confident in the ocean.
